California requires drivers to carry a minimum of $15,000/$30,000 in liability coverage. That coverage means that if you injure someone in an accident, any one individual can recover up to $15,000 from your insurance. If there are multiple people injured, then the victims would split the $30,000 based upon the nature and extent of their damages. No one person could recover more than $15,000. However, that is the minimal policy. Generally, most everyone carries this type of policy and it is aimed at protecting you from being sued by another person.
However, what happens when someone else hits you who only has a $15,000/$30,000 policy or some other amount that is insufficient to cover your damages or if they have no insurance? In that case, every insurance policy provides uninsured (UM) and underinsured (UIM) motorist coverage. Typically, I see clients who have very small UM/UIM coverage yet they carry significantly more liability coverage. What they don't realize is that the liability coverage is going to pay somebody else and the UM/UIM coverage would be amounts that would go to them if they were seriously injured by somebody who does not have proper coverage. In other words, UM/UIM will be a source of compensation to a victim who is injured by somebody who did not have enough insurance.
